BROTHERHOOD: Brothers of Sigma Lambda Beta pride themselves in creating a family-oriented atmosphere not only at the campuses we are present at, but on a regional and national level as well. As a Brother, one has many opportunities to travel and meet brothers from other campuses and states through national events such as Founders, Festival Del Sol, and our National Convention. This support network is one of the key aspects that make our organization so powerful.
SCHOLARSHIP: Academic success and higher education are some of the main goals driving Sigma Lambda Beta. To help achieve this, the
Sigma Lambda Beta Educational Foundation was founded in 2001. This foundation receives, manages and distributes endowment gifts, deferred gifts, annual gifts, and special gifts for the purpose of funding educational and leadership development programs for Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity, as well as direct financial assistance for undergraduate and graduate student members. To back up our emphasis on education, we have a high percentage of graduating members (100% at UCSC) and post-bachelorate degrees.
CULTURAL AWARENESS: Emphasis is placed on making cultural awareness present on campus. This is extremely important and essential on campuses nationwide, as almost all American Universities have a strong lack of diversity. Although we are a latino-based organization, this principle is not limited to latino cultures; Brothers of Sigma Lambda Beta make an effort to experience and familiarize ourselves with different cultures. Some of the more popular events carried out by Brothers in the past are: El Dia De Los Muertos, Cinco De Mayo and the Puerto Rican Day Parade.
COMMUNITY SERVICE: Sigma Lambda Beta always strives to give back to the community. Since 1986, Brothers have made a difference in their respective regions with emphasis being placed on the Latino communities. Each affiliation of our organization concentrates on different programs based on location. Many of these range from tutoring and motivational speaking to planting trees and building houses for low-income families. As an organization, Sigma Lambda Beta has the power to make a difference in the lives of many.
VICTOR CORREA CPR AWARENESS DAY: On December 23rd, 1992, Brother Victor Correa was pulled underwater on a Puerto Rican beach by a strong undercurrent. Brother Correa was not a swimmer and was drowning until a friend noticed and pulled him out onto the beach. Brother Correa was still alive on the beach, but due to the lack of knowledge of CPR by anyone present on the shore, Brother Correa died shortly before paramedics came. To honor Brother Correa, Sigma Lambda Beta helps teach our local communities CPR annually on November 17th. Since its inception, Sigma Lambda Beta has trained thousands in CPR and may have possibly helped save lives in the process
COLLEGIATE LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM: One of our main goals is to develop Latino leaders for tomorrow. Many of our Brothers hold high positions around campus. We strive to train and place our Brothers into position in which they can be influential for Latino/Minority affairs. We do this through experience and contact with other organizations, sending Brothers to conferences, and with the Collegiate Leadership and Development Program (or CLDP). The United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI) helps sponsor this 6 week leadership program. The CLDP is designed to create more effective and influential leaders at universities around the country.
LOCAL PHILANTHROPIES: The Lambda Gamma Chapter at UCSC is involved with certain organizations and causes that our chapter brothers feel passionate about. This includes:
The Second Harvest Food Bank, MEND, The UCSC Student Volunteer Center, and National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Lambda Gamma Chapter's involvement with these organizations and causes aren't because we are required to do so or because it looks great on paper, but because we genuinely want to help these amazing organizations and important causes. Non-brothers are
ALWAYS welcome to help out with our chapter's philanthropic work.
